Bras Basah and Bugis area is home to more than 20 historical siites and National Monuments. The National Heritage Board yesterday launched a series of events and mobile applications to showcase the area’s rich history and heritage.
At the National Library Building Atrium, a gallery called the Bras Basah, Bugis (BBB) Heritage Gallery is located. The BBB Heritage Gallery will trace the history of the precinct from the early 1800s, and offer visitors insights into the origins of over 20 historical sites and monuments located within the area.
Additionally, NHB introduce a new mobile application (iPhone & iPad only) titled Walk Singapore: Bras Basah Bugis. It serves as a free self-guided walking guide to Singapore’s arts and cultural precinct. The application offers four different trails for Singaporeans to explore at their own leisure.
The four different trails consisted of the following;
- Museums Trail – This trail will take visitors on a discovery journey of seven museums located in the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct and showcase the diverse and expansive offerings of Singapore’s museums based on topics such as Singapore history, contemporary art and Peranakan culture.
- National Monuments Trail – This trail, which has two options, will invite visitors to explore the National Monuments housed within the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct, and provide visitors with information about the architecture and rich history behind each of the monuments.
- Waterloo Street & Queen Street Trail – This trail will lead visitors on a journey to explore the arts and cultural enclave along Waterloo Street and Queen Street, and showcase the enclave’s cultural offerings of museums, places of worship and creative art spaces.
- BBB Complete Trail – This comprehensive trail will guide visitors on a learning journey about the development of the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct from its beginnings in the 1800s up to the present day, and highlight the museums, national monuments and other interesting landmarks that are worth visiting within the precinct.
Students from Nanyang Technological University’s Tourism and Hospitality Management Club, formed a project called Singapore Footprints. With this project, they lead you on weekly free guided tours. The tours will commence on 7 January 2012 with two tours happening every Saturday and Sunday.
The project seeks to provide free guided tours every weekend for members of the public who are interested to learn more about Singapore River, the Civic District and the Bras Basah and Bugis precinct.
