Mendaki Learning Festival 2012

I was invited to the press briefing for the Mendaki Learning Festival. This is part of Mendaki’s 30th anniversary celebration. During the briefing, Yayasan Mendaki also signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) with the National Library Board’s(NLB) Singapore Memory Project(SMP). SMP is a whole-of-nation movement, led by NLB aiming to capture and document precious moments and memories related to Singapore.

Mendaki Learning Festival is happening at the Singapore Expo, Hall5B from 15 to 17 June 2012 and is open from 10am to 10pm. Admission to the festival is free.

There will be 9 pavilions at the Mendaki Learning Festival, namely, irememberMendaki Pavilion, KIDSWONDER Pavilion, CSI PAVILION, ACTIVE PAVILION, FAMILY CENTRAL, EDUCATION PAVILION, SENSE PAVILION, DISCOVERY PAVILION and FUTURAMA. irememberMendaki PAVILION is interesting in that with the signing of the MOU, it collaborates with SMP to trace the journey of Mendaki and Malay-Muslim community over the past 30 years. The public can contribute their memories of Mendaki through SingaporeMemory.Sg.

One of the interesting highlights of the 3-day festival is the Congkak Challenge. The Challenge aims to set a record in the Singapore Book of Records by bringing together at least 1,000 people at one time to play congkak, a traditional Malay game. It is believed that congkak come from the Malay word “Congak” meaning “mental calculation”, which is a pre-requisite of an efficient player to collect points in the planned moves. The Congkak Challenge will take place on Sunday, 17 June 2012.

To pre-register for the festival, log on to the Guests are invited to experience the use of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) at public events like Learning Festival where your updates and activities will be shared across social networks like Facebook. Upon entry to the Learning Festival, each family will be issued with a pass. Please be reminded that this is a free entry event. With the pass and with a simple registration at available terminals, you can check in at the various PAVILIONs such as FUTURAMA, so your visit wil be automatically updated to your Facebook as well as at both MENDAKI and SENSE Facebook pages ( and This will be a great tool to use to find out whether your friends and relatives are also at the Learning Festival!
