Since reading The eOK posting with regards to using the freely available tool from Google, Google Alerts, I have customised that tool for my own use.
And my use of the tool, has not just restricted me to just using it for social media, I have developed alerts to see if anyone is talking about me (yes, this is particularly effective to know if any of my outreach is working! and also, particularly ego-boosting when it does come in). I have also added in useful keywords like “retrenchment +Singapore”; which has proven very good at pointing out blogs that have actually dedicated themselves to blog about the state of employment/retrenchment in Singapore. These blogs include, but not limited to,

Google Alerts send me daily feeds via email; that I can read leisurely. It’s an effective form of RSS feed. With the usual RSS feed, you have to refer to the reader regularly to see if you have missed out anything. With the alerts, the longest delay you will get, is 1 day.
And not just retrenchment, as a personal guide, I have used it to track the world over for people who write about suffering from gout or working on having a low purine diet to prevent gout attack. The possibilities are limitless. I have to thank Ben again for putting that up. Here’s a few more stethoscope you can use if you think you can manage the information overflow.

For now, I’m pretty contented with Google Alerts.
Two bloggers recently posted, about SAF’s heavy-handed approach for service personnels who are active in the social network scene. Brennan argued for for personnels to be tacit & discreet when posting matters related to their units, while SingaporeCitizen espouses freedom of speech as the best weapon to uncover abuses and mismanagement.
