Cruising Through History

July 21, 2008 by mhisham · Leave a Comment

Preface -  I have been an active volunteer with Oogachaga Counseling & Support for over 5 years since 2003. Initially I have been involved in a support group as a participant. Thereafter, I have served in various positions in support groups, hotline management as well as web & email administration. I am currently helping out Oogachaga with the transition to Web 2.0 platform.

This year, in collaboration with PLU as part of IndigNation, Oogachaga brings to you “Cruising through History”.

Where were the favourite hang-outs of gay men and women in the 1970s? How has the GLBTQ community developed throughout the years?

Oogachaga presents “CRUISING THROUGH HISTORY”, a forum where members of our community to share their stories of growing up as gay men & women in Singapore. Local writer Alfian Sa’at will provide a socio-cultural perspective on how our gay community came to be where it is today.

Join in our discussion on how understanding the past can better prepare us for where we are heading, and how societal and personal acceptances have an impact on us.

To Be Facilitated By:

Jeremy Kwok

Jeremy Kwok is one of the 15 Singaporeans who was featured in SQ21, and is currently serving the nation. A charismatic persona, he has been actively involved in the development of the youth gay community. He will be facilitating the forum and will also be sharing some of his personal growing up experience as a gay of the Ipod generation.

Our Panelists:

1. Roy Tan

Roy Tan is obsessively interested in the development of the gay community in Singapore. He has been actively filing away in his mind almost every newspaper article and television report since he was in secondary school, 37 years ago.

He started all the Singapore gay articles in Wikipedia and has uploaded videos of almost every major local gay event to YouTube. He is also an active contributor to SiGNeL, the Singapore Gay NewsList.

Roy would like to see the formation of a self-sustaining gay civilisation in Singapore, including the possibility of true homosexual biological reproduction.

2. Alfian Sa’at –

Alfian Sa’at is a Resident Playwright at W!ld Rice. He is the author of ‘One Fierce Hour‘, ‘A History of Amnesia‘ and ‘Corridor: 12 Short Stories‘.
